I love driving my kid to school. We have some great conversations on our way. Today, I was telling him that we should start exploring some other radio stations since there are so many genres of music. You know, I told him, rock, blues, jazz, folk. He interrupted me with this: “Mom, do you know what I like? Country music.”
Eeep.
Really?
That just happens to be the one type of music I’ve never been able to wrap my head around. I have memories of Tammy Wynette singing D-I-V-O-R-C-E. And although I loved it when I was a kid, Sneaky Snake (Tom T. Hall) resonates as one of those songs that has me backing slowly away from the radio dial. Sneaky Snake goes a dancin’, wigglin’ and a hissin’…
I realize it’s changed quite a bit, but it’s still not my cup of tea. Although I did purchase my one and only country-music CD a couple of years ago. The Dixie Chicks. Had to have their version of Landslide. Got all the other stuff along with it, which I’m cool enough with because Natalie’s voice is just gorgeous. That CD happened to be in the car this morning too. So to prove that I’m flexible, I plopped it into the CD player and we boogied along. In the middle of the first song, Dev hollers to me, “Mom! I like this!”
I aim to please.
Noooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!
There are probably a lot of country-sounding groups that you’d both like: jayhawks, kelly willis, lyle lovett, son volt, mary-chapin carpenter, iris dement. It’s great that Dev is showing some preferences independent of yours! (And great that you’re willing to expose him to a variety of styles.)
