The quest for Franz

If only that woman hadn’t been sitting in front of me, I would have gotten a better photo

We’d already made our plans to go to Chicago for the new year, but I created a bit of a mission out of the trip. What kind of mission? We absolutely had to be at Andy’s Jazz Club at noon on Friday to see Franz Jackson. I read about him in Chicago Magazine last month, discovering that he was a 91-year-old sax player. Can you imagine? 91 years old and still playing the sax at a club every Friday? I hero-worshipped this guy before I even saw him play a note.

He and the rest of the band were definitely worth the trip. And he even sang a la Louis Armstrong on “Sunny Side of the Street”. There will be more trips to Chicago and I can promise that Franz will be on the schedule. And Von Freeman too.
