20090822-DSC_0023I’m glad that Devin likes to play games. I might go crazy if not because his other favorite options are playing cars and super heroes. Neither of which really top my list of preferred activities. He does have one board game, though, that I absolutely despise. It’s a Thomas the Tank Engine game, which would be fine, except that it takes FOREVER to win. No one has one thus far. Our patience runs out before we ever get close.

So, evil mom that I can sometimes be, whenever he asks if we can play Thomas, I try to wriggle out of it. My logic the other night was that we never play Candy Land or Chutes and Ladders. Apparently that was a brilliant observation because he ran gleefully downstairs and grabbed both games. And we played one round of each game in just half an hour. Score!

On Father’s Day, we packed up the gang (father, mother, kid and canine) and headed to the beach. The one that allows dogs. Because I hate to leave her behind.

There was much discussion beforehand as to whether it was a good idea to go on a weekend and on one of the first really truly hot days of the year. But ya know what? There aren’t as many people who are excited about visiting a dog beach as you might think. Just the ever-cool dog people. So we had a nice chunk of sand to ourselves. And plenty of canine companionship at our beck and call.

Oh, and the occasion to learn how to long jump. Which, surprisingly, he was happy to do to indulge his daddy. And he wasn’t all that bad at it either.

Scott stretched on the grass and we invaded his space. We’re nice like that.

Happy anniversary, Scott! The picnic at the playground was lovely. Smooch!

I love the light in the evenings. Especially now that the clocks have proceeded ahead and we actually get light after 6:00 p.m. Twilight time is kind of magical. Even inside, when I sit with my eyes closed while my child hides toy cars beneath paper Speed Racer cups so I can guess where they are.

Sigh. The wine rack is terribly empty.

I was playing around with manual focus and forgot to flip it back when we were using the remote. Ah, well. I love this pic anyway.

It shows the lovely sunshine we’ve been having the past few days. We’ve needed it. To counteract the miserable cold. February wears me out. I’m so glad March is here and that there’s a glimmer of hope on the horizon. I saw 50 forecast for Friday. I can hang in there. Yes, I can!

20090224-dsc_0915I just love his expression here. It captures his impishness. And he is indeed an imp. An ever-so-charming imp.

I said to him tonight, “I can’t believe you’re almost five. What happened to my baby?”

He replied, “I can still be your baby when I’m five, Mom.”

Perfect answer!

We had pizza for dinner. And some chit-chat. I love that we all sit down at the table together. Although the kid doesn’t always take the word “sit” very seriously.

‘Nuff said.

Did you have a happy holiday?

Here it was pretty warm and merry and cheerful. The kid happily zipped through his presents. The dinner came together pretty easily. And we enjoyed some darn good family time.

One more holiday left to celebrate. One more week left in the year. I hope your day was peaceful and joyful.

We were outside in the fall sunshine again today. In celebration of the beautiful weather, yes, but also in celebration of our family.

Four years ago today this little guy flew into our lives.

It’s been a magical time. I love being a mom. I love being his mom. I love him. Oodles. Even when he’s super tired and acting like a maniac as he was today. As I tell him, “I’ll love you always and forever.”

And it’s true.

Gorgeously sunny weekends is just one of them.

Last weekend hit 80 degrees. This weekend was more typical. Long sleeves and a jacket. Perfect romping in the leaves and exploring weather. Scott drove us over to the west coast and we explored Montague and Pentwater. Dev was a bit bummed out that the putt-putt golf place was closed, but he was happy enough hitting the playground, running around and hiking (a very short trail).
